Department of Social Services

The Department's Mission is to promote social well-being, self sufficiency and quality of life.  The Department provides a variety of social service programs for its residents.  Some of these programs include crisis intervention and case management services, benefits counseling and advocacy, limited emergency assistance, emergency fuel and utility assistance, intake site for energy assistance applications, budget counseling, recreational fee waiver for summer camp programs, and information and referral.

RENTER'S REBATE

 The Department is presently taking applications for the Renter's Rebate program.  The program provides low-income elderly (age 65 & older) and disabled residents a "rebate" of their rent and utilities.  The program is State funded and managed by the Office of Policy and Management.  The program looks at income and rent/utilities paid in the previous year (2005).  Maximum income levels are $27,700 for a single individual and $33,900 for a married couple.  Filing period is May 15, 2006 – September 15, 2006.  For more information or to apply, contact this office at 896-2375.

SUMMER CAMP

Camp ConnRI, the Salvation Army overnight camp located in Ashford, offers summer camp for low-income children ages 7-11.  Activities include swimming, hiking, fishing boating, arts & crafts, & sports.  A grandparent's camp is also offered.  This program is for grandparents raising grandchildren.  The grandparent will enjoy a retreat while the grandchild enjoys the camping experience.  For more information or an application, contact this office at 896-2375.

 Adopt a Family or Child for "Back to School Clothes"

The 2006/07 school year is vastly approaching and Vernon Social Services is again doing its "Back to School Clothing" program. Clothing children for school can be a very difficult task for low-income families and Vernon Social Services tries to address this hardship by helping these families get new clothes for their K-6th grade children. If you or your organization wishes to adopt a child or family for "Back to
School Clothes" or make a monetary donation please contact Vernon Social Services by August 10
th at 896-2375. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The Housing Authority directed by Catherine F. Melan, PHM, COSP, has 615 housing units under its jurisdiction. This includes 149 Federal elderly, 134 State elderly, 280 Section 8 Rental Assistance for families, 8 family Scattered Site units and 44 units of Congregate Housing for "frail elderly".

Vernon Youth Services Bureau

The Vernon Youth Services Bureau directed by Alan M. Slobodien is a multi-program department that provides prevention, early intervention, information/referral and crisis intervention services. Core programs include: Truancy Intervention, Peer Advocate Programs, After-School and Summer Programs.  The YSB collaborates with other service providers to develop a continuum of care for Vernon youth and their families.
